OTTAWA EXPLOSION WEEKEND is happening again!

OTTAWA EXPLOSION WEEKEND 2012 will taking place JUNE 14th to 17th.

Last year, 40+ bands and 1 stand-up comedian performed in 3 days. There were some amazing sets from local favorites as well as bands from Montreal, Sudbury,Moncton and Halifax and even as far as Nashville and Austin play at various venues including bars, record stores, basements and even a laundromat.

Hosehead Records out of Southern Ontario has been putting out tapes by a bunch of great bands like Red Dons, Sonic Avenues and The Midwest Beat.

They've recently released a couple of tapes for bands out of Ottawa. They've just released the cassette version of THE WHITE WIRES second lp originally out on Dirtnap as well as a split from Sam Coffey and the Iron Lungs with Ottawa's own THE SHAKEY ACHES.

RatTail are a three piece rock outfit from Toronto, Ontario Canada formed in the spring of 2009. RatTail is Jasmyn Burke (Hot Monogamy) on guitar and vocals, backed by Jesse Matthews (the Strag) who plays the drums, and makes the visuals, and Tim Fagan (We're Marching On) on bass duties. Toronto's Unfamiliar Records released RatTail's limited edition (300 copies George Mounsey 7" in late spring 2010. Which was followed by a long summer tour all across Canada. Since then they have been hard at work writing new material and are set to release an album for October 2011.

This Friday was Zebrassieres record release party. They played at Vertigo Records with Statues to celebrate the store's eight birthday. They later played a show at Dekcuf with Rat Tales and Strange Attractor which served as their record release party and as the world premiere of their video for Lone Fish off of the "Black Brainwave" record they just released.

CRUSADES have released their debut lp on It's Alive!/Razorcake records which you can stream HERE. The record will be released on October 26th at their show with Obits and Pregnancy Scares at Babylon.

ZEBRASSIERES have digitally unleashed their first 12" called "Black Brainwave" which you can stream HERE. The vinyl version on P.Trash Records will be available October 14th at their record release party at Dekcuf with Strange Attractor and Rat Tales as well at the Vertigo Records 8th Anniversary party with Statues and Joey Shithead.

The documentary FROM THE BACK OF THE ROOM is premiering tonight at 9:15 at the Mayfair Theatre.

Covering 30 years of female involvement in the DIY punk/Riot Grrrl scene Including interviews with members of Le Tigre, Bikini Kill, Thulsa Doom, Harum Scarum and many more!

Many people have the impression that the Riot Grrrl movement in the mid-90s was the end-all, be-all of female involvement in DIY punk. This is definitely not the case! Plenty of amazing ladies prior to this era paved the way for it, and plenty of amazing ladies continue to help keep DIY together today. This documentary chronicles the past 30 years of female involvement in DIY punk, and has interviews with over 30 women from across the country, ages 17 to 40. Race, gender, sexuality, motherhood, class, and activism are all addressed in this film, giving a more complete picture of how these women participate in the DIY community, and how it affects their daily lives.

Last Saturday Ottawa lost yet another punk band. GERM ATTAK called it quits after 6 years of putting out records and touring the globe. Here's Jo's reasons why GERM ATTAK is breaking up:

1: while some old bands may be good live,their new records are terrible. thats why weve decided to quit while ahead.

2: when simon left the band in december 2010,we decided to break up.we just had to do a tour to support our new record.

3: will hates playing drums.rick isnt a bass player:hes a guitar player.and i have no motivation to do anything in life anymore.

4: we have done everything there is to do.we have 10 records and have toured almost all over the world. we have done more than any other ottawa punk band has ever done.

5: time to move on. stagnation is a killer.

6: not much people are interested in real punk.most punks like crust,retro american hc,d-beat,grind,pop punk ..no one gets it.

Centretown Recording Alliance

The Centretown Recording Alliance is a group of local musicians featuring members of The Allrights, The Mnemonics, The Johnnies, etc. etc. etc. These tireless people are constantly starting new bands or one-off projects to keep themselves entertained.

In January, they created a recording challenge where everyone had a month to come up with a recording of some sort. The results can be found on the CENTRETOWN RECORDS bandcamp page.

Just in time for Canada Day there was a new challenge set for the CRA: Record a cover of a Canadian song. The results were interesting and you can hear them HERE.

My original top picks were the songs done by VAGLAB, D$MONEY feat. LOSERGEEK and LOSERSWEEPERS take on Concrete Blondes' "Joey" which was then disqualified due to the fact that Concrete Blonde is in no way shape or form a Canadian band. This bumped up JOHNNY JUMP-UP & THE ALL-WRONGS into the Top 3!

Mix the punk venom of some of the more notorious riot grrrl bands of the 90’s with the guitar noodling and tempo of UK post punk by way of John Reis and you get something pretty close to WHITE LUNG.

Simultaneously active in Vancouver's noise rock scene and its seedy crust punk underbelly, Nü Sensae bridge the gap with a sonically bludgeoning bass-and-drum attack. With TV, Death and the Devil, the duo successfully abridged their simple set-up to a cohesive album with a newfound appreciation for dynamics. Strengthened by softer sections, rare moments of singing and relatively longer ideas (two songs break the three-minute mark), the album pushed Nü Sensae forward without sacrificing any of the maniacal, sludgy riffing or doom-laden lyrics that made them so endearing.

The White Wires - "I Remember You" Live!

I was able to catch The White Wires play at Fever Fest this Saturday.

It was a fun outdoor show in a tent in a parking lot.

They played a new song called "I Remember You" and the recording I made is a bit rough but the song is insanely catchy nonetheless. Can't wait for them to put out another record!

A recent addition to Ottawa punk bills, but no strangers to our scene, are Motivator. They spent the rest of the summer playing sweaty loft parties and bbqs and are now poised to be one of the new breakout bands from Montreal this coming year. Their super lo-fi, fun, fuzzy, garagy sound and loveable live show is infectious. Mikey and Kathryn are such a cool, loveable couple to see up front and center. Already darlings of the Montreal scene, they're now getting attention from usa labels, bloggers, press,etc..

A huge THANKS to everyone who came out to the shows! We really appreciate everyone coming out early to catch the opening bands and sticking around to catch every band. This weekend was the absolute best and We look forward to having another huge party next year.

A huge THANKS to all the bands who played. Most of the bands who played this weekend were local bands and they were ALL amazing. It is absolutely insane how great bands in this city are and we are very lucky to have them. The styles and genres differed widely but the quality never wavered. Mind blowing. Thanks to the out of town bands for traveling all the way here and killing it!

A huge THANKS to everyone who helped out behind the scenes, doing doors, selling merch, carrying/driving gear, etc. We couldn't have done it without you.

Last night was an absolute blast! Thanks to everyone who came out!

Things are kicking off with a special in-store at Vertigo at 8 pm. Show up early if you want to get in because there is limited space to get in to see PREGNANCY SCARES & MOTIVATOR.
If you don't get in you can always hang out in Crack Alley or hit up the Garlic Corner on Dalhousie because they sell 2 beers or 2 shots for 6 bucks or something crazy like that!

Doors for the Dekcuf/Mavericks show are getting pushed up to 8:30.

Mammoth Cave Recording Co. has now put up a pre-order for the new Bloodstains Across Ontario 7" compilation. It's the third compilation in a series of comps featuring bands from a specific province playing minute long songs about something related to their hometown/province.

Bloodstains Across Ontario features a lot of great bands several of which are playing the Ottawa Explosion weekend! Hopefully the 7" will be out in time for it!

Eric Neurotic from Fear Of Lipstick has decided to turn Fucking Scam Records into a fledgling label.

Yeah so I decided to start a record label/distro. Had put out a couple of Fear of Lipstick releases in the past on it, but I decided to put out other bands on it as well. The new Kamalas 7" to start. It's up on the site for free download right now and the actual vinyl release will be out in time for their upcoming trip to the Ottawa Explosion in June and available here in Moncton at the release show with the Beaten Hearts on July 3rd at the PlanB. About a year ago these three fine gentlemen started playing some pretty trashy, dirty blues. It brought back fond memories of Ottawa in the late 90s. They turned up the 'verb, maxed out the fuzz and screamed some excellent garage in a way that would make Jon Spenser proud as piss. Sadly, it wasn't meant to be. So if you haven't had a chance to see them yet, you got one last chance.

New Bands!

So I've recently added a bunch of links to bands in the "bands" section of this site. I also sadly added (r.i.p.) next to more than a few names as well.

One of the new bands I've added are RAT TALES. This is the new band from the maniacs from THE GIRLFRIENDS who played their last show ever on Saturday. It picks up where they left and I'm curious to see where they take it. They're playing on April 30th with a band from Boston called GIRLFRIENDS because those kids are geniuses like that. It's also the eviction party for the apartment they're playing in. I once saw an epic display of partying go down in this apartment last summer and I'm sure this will be no different/crazier.

Another band involves some shameless self-promotion on my behalf. PREGNANCY SCARES recently put out a demo tape a couple of weeks ago. You can hear a couple of songs by clicking HERE. We're playing this Friday with a bunch of great bands for GERM ATTAK's lp release show!

Puker Nation Zine!

I've been picking up as many issues of this zine as I can. I usually pick them up at Vertigo but they're usually available at a few other locations. PUKER NATION is a fun zine done by a young gal in high school. I love the enthusiasm dripping off every page and the fact that a handwritten zine is done in this day and age by someone who grew up in the age of the computer. Most people don't even bother to put forward anything tactile anymore and just take it for granted that people will know about certain books, bands or whatever or can just search it out on the internet. PUKER NATION writes about these things with great enthusiasm and excitement and it's very refreshing to read. It's great to know there are people keeping the spirit of excitement and d.i.y. alive. PUKER NATION does however have an online presence and you can check out the blog which will also link you to digital versions of all of the issues if you can't seem to find any of the physical copies.

I am a terrible "blogger" which is obvious by looking at this site. I'm not sure if I should try to keep this thing going or just give up completely.

There has been a lot of great stuff happening lately though. The STEVE ADAMYK BAND lp was recently released by P.TRASH records. The release show happened on Nov 4th at Babylon with CRUSADES & STATUES and it was an absolute blast. The record is getting a great response including Mr Ben Weasel using his twitter to proclaim "The Steve Adamyk Band LP is the best record of 2010 as far as I can tell." The Steve Adamyk Band is going to be playing SCREECHING WEASEL's 25th Anniversary show at the end of May! It has already been announced that the next Steve Adamyk Band lp will be out on DIRTNAP records.

Speaking of DIRTNAP records, they have recently released the second lp from local favorites THE WHITE WIRES! The record is called "WWII" and it is absolutely amazing. It continues on the forward trajectory they've been taking with every record that's come out since the lp. Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of this amazing record. You can do so at the record release party that is happening next week!

I haven't posted anything new on this in a long time. To anyone who actually checks this. I'm sorry. But to make it up to you, I present you with this.
A month ago I posted about the SUPPOSITORIES last show that was happening at Bored To Death.

THE DAGGER EYES are the new band forming out of 1/2 of SUPPOSITORIES. That half being comprised of Ian (bass/vocals) and Ilona (guitar). I clicked on a link to their myspace page and clicked on the first song not really knowing what to expect. Holy shit! I was immediately pummeled by a blast of punk fury. Somewhat similar to the approach that SUPPOSITORIES were going for but THE DAGGER EYES turn it up a few notches till the knob broke off or exploded. Straight-forward and simple but way faster, more exciting and more intense.

RAYGUN starts with 4 drum hits then the guitars come running out of the gate playing one chord. That's all that was needed. Ian's vocals kick in delivered in his high pitched voice that sounds like he's being chocked by some invisible hand. They throw in some electronic sounds and manipulations on the vocals that are a nice touch. A minute and twenty-two seconds of punk perfection.

With the second song, VAMPIRE, I am getting a very late 70's/early 80's Orange County vibe from it. Totally dark and vicious like getting chased into a dark alley by a razor-wielding psycho. Another really straight-forward and simple song with a spoken verse then the chorus blasts in "I SANK MY TEETH INTO YOUR FLESH!"

I'm really liking these songs a lot. These two songs pressed onto vinyl would make a killer debut single. I am VERY curious to see what else they have up their sleeves but for now these two songs will do. Definitely looking forward to seeing them live.

I'm just happy that I'll be able to see the SUPPOSITORIES play one last time. They absolutely killed it at GAGA WEEKEND III and haven't played since then.

They are playing at BORED TO DEATH with a new Montreal band called GENITAL HOSPITAL.

THE SUPPOSITORIES are one of the truest forms of punk to have ever graced Ottawa. There is no doubt their sludgy, hard-hitting minimalism would have been on all the Killed By Death, Smash The State and Bloodstains comps, if they existed 30 years ago. Crusades!

CRUSADES is a new band in Ottawa. They played their first show at the GAGA WEEKEND 3 and are going to be playing their second show this Friday opening for RED DONS. This show will also serve as a release party for their 7" on SCARED TO DEATH Records.

Here's a little description of the band that appeared in the program for GGW3.

CRUSADES is based on a primary concern: creating a new vehicle for old ideas - most importantly a vehicle decidedly more accessible than those typically employed for these ideas. Drawing from philosophies espoused by such visionaries as Integrity, Gorgoroth, LaVey, Pale Creation, Ulver, DeGrimston, Emperor, etc., Crusades is something of an aural wolf in sheep's clothing, if you will.

The DEATH TO COPS 7" is a real rager and it comes free with issue #1 of WE ARE PRETENTIOUS ASSHOLES zine. The zine is done by Spencer from YOUNG STALIN and is about record collecting. Here's a little note from Spencer regarding the 7".

Let's discuss the Zine a bit more with a not so shameless plug. It comes with the latest Germ Attak 7", Death To Cops. Four tracks of that great Germ Attak sound, but all revolving around anti-cop themes. This was a split label effort. I did 100 copies with the zine, and then 3 other labels did 300. Jo's Capitalicide handled Canada, Loud Punk from the US, and Yellow Dog in Europe. A global effort for the group that recently toured Indonesia, Malaysia and Japn after several North American ventures and one in Europe. Each label had the same crazy cover art, done by Scott Benz, but all had their own variations.

It also features a few interesting first-hand accounts of record shopping and other record collecting stories and an interview with Pink Eyes of Fucked Up. Pick it up!

The Creeps - Follow You Home 7"

THE CREEPS have just released their new 7" called FOLLOW YOU HOME. It came out on IT'S ALIVE! records. Here's what IT'S ALIVE! had to say about the record:

The Creeps have been doing their thing for the better part of a decade now. They get better and better with each release. They've been ruling these past couple of years. Follow You Home is The Creeps' sound perfected! Incredible lead and backing vocals, bright and shiny guitar leads over driving rhythms, thick clean bass lines over precision drum beats... it's all there. It's hard to imagine them getting any better than this, but then again it has been and upward trend ever since their beginning. We're super excited to finally have a record out with these creeps!

These four songs rip really hard. 3 new songs plus a re-recorded version of their song from the OTTAWA GAGA compilation that came out last summer. This band is unstoppable and keep getting better and better and people are really starting to take notice. They've recently opened up for THE RIVERDALES played INSUBORDINATION FEST last month. A common find among these lists was the seminal SO WHAT'S LEFT NOW? LP by Portland, Oregon's THE OBSERVERS released on VINYL WARNING in 2004. The dawn of a new decade is upon us and Doug Burns (Lead singer/songwriter/artist of THE OBSERVERS) has a new band, the RED DONS, featuring Daniel Hajji Husayn, Richard Joachim Preinesberger, and a rotating cast of characters including Justin Maurer (Clorox Girls), Will Kinser (Born/Dead), Zack Brooks (Soda Pop Kids), and Andy Foote (The Physical Challenge). MOTHER'S CHILDREN - That's Who!

MOTHER'S CHILDREN have been laying low and working hard for a while now. They took an almost half a year break from playing shows while they worked on writing and recording their first LP. After seeing them live a couple of times recently it is plain to see that they've been working hard. Their first LP is called "That's Who!" and is out now courtesy of punk rock/hardcore powerhouse label DERANGED RECORDS. They may seem out of place on this label but if you consider the fact that they've released records for TRANZMITORS, STATUES & THE BAYONETTES - MOTHER'S CHILDREN fit right in.

The record is 11 songs that are a great mix of glam, power pop and catchy rock & roll/punk. MOTHER'S CHILDREN watch SLADE & RASPBERRIES lose a razor fight with THE BOYS & EDDIE AND THE HOT RODS in an alley then they all head to the bar for a drink together.
