I am a terrible "blogger" which is obvious by looking at this site. I'm not sure if I should try to keep this thing going or just give up completely.

There has been a lot of great stuff happening lately though. The STEVE ADAMYK BAND lp was recently released by P.TRASH records. The release show happened on Nov 4th at Babylon with CRUSADES & STATUES and it was an absolute blast. The record is getting a great response including Mr Ben Weasel using his twitter to proclaim "The Steve Adamyk Band LP is the best record of 2010 as far as I can tell." The Steve Adamyk Band is going to be playing SCREECHING WEASEL's 25th Anniversary show at the end of May! It has already been announced that the next Steve Adamyk Band lp will be out on DIRTNAP records.

Speaking of DIRTNAP records, they have recently released the second lp from local favorites THE WHITE WIRES! The record is called "WWII" and it is absolutely amazing. It continues on the forward trajectory they've been taking with every record that's come out since the lp. Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of this amazing record. You can do so at the record release party that is happening next week!

Capital Distraction presents...

Only a few days shy of their 3 year anniversary THE WHITE WIRES are dropping their 2nd full-length! They've released a couple of singles since their first lp and now this highly anticipated record is coming out on Dirtnap Records! 11 tracks of insanely catchy power pop that will make you pogo til you puke! These 3 cool cats barely play anymore th...ese days so you are truly a fool if you miss the chance to not only see them but also pick up their brand new record!!!

They play less than a handful of shows a year. This is their first show since the end of July. Perfectly-crafted intense power punk from a group of guys who have been doing it for years. Expect a record on GOING GAGA in the future which will make flip out and wish that this band played more than 3 times a year.

This is the new band forming out of 1/2 of SUPPOSITORIES. That half being comprised of Ian (bass/vocals) and Ilona (guitar). This is their first show EVER! Be prepared to be pummeled by a blast of punk fury. Somewhat similar to the approach that SUPPOSITORIES were going for but THE DAGGER EYES turn it up a few notches till the knob broke off or exploded. Straight-forward and simple but way faster, more exciting and more intense.

Two great shows back to back!

Capital Distraction presents...

TY SEGALL (San Francisco) http://www.myspace.com/tysegall

"San Francisco psych wunderkind Ty Segall continues a tireless musical assault on ears and minds with his third album, Melted. Segall says it sounds like "cherry cola, Sno-Cones and taffy." Indeed! Over the past two years he's released records more often than most people do laundry, but somehow there is still a heap of anticipation for this new album on Goner packed full of truly psychedelic pop songs with great vocals and exciting arrangements.

On the heels of two critically acclaimed solo albums, Segall holed up in a basement studio with Mike Donovan of the SicAlps in late 2009 and early 2010 to come up with Melted. It's a carefree yet precise balance of acoustic and electric elements. Distorted echo and thunder mix together with enough clean guitar lines and addictive choruses to deliver an album that recalls the '60s without sounding like anything created during that decade. Time melts away, vision melts away, minds melt away. Get Melted! " -Panache

SO COW (Tuam, Ireland) http://www.myspace.com/socow

So Cow is the ongoing musical project of a young Tuam gentleman, Brian Kelly. 2009 saw him release his first LP in the US, a compilation of his own self-released work, on Chicago's Tic Tac Totally Records. So Cow has been described in some quarters as Swell Maps meets Abba, with a live show based around rousing choral moments, guitar insanity and occasionally upsetting self-injury.
Half way through 09’, So Cow have paid visits to Scotland (Fence Homegame Festival), France, Canada and the US. Bills have been shared with Tyvek, Love Is All and Girls. Past supports have included Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, Dan Deacon and Maximo Park. The 2nd So Cow LP Meaningless Friendly is set for release in February 2010. A run of 7” singles will precede the next album on various labels in the US.

TEENANGER (Toronto) http://www.myspace.com/teenangerrr

"Since early Stooges-worshiping, tape-only releases, Toronto, ON garage dudes and ladies Teenanger have been making some of the best sloppy, endearing, throwback rock'n'roll in a town full of sloppy, endearing, throwback rock'n'roll ― no small feat. With Give Me Pink, however, the band have managed to step into a sound they can comfortably call their own while still wearing their influences proudly on their jean jackets. "Alone On Acid" kicks things off with a high-power, minimal riff and a simple beat before the song starts spitting out heavily reverberated vocals with a full-force instrumental backing. It's apparent that a lot of thought has gone into getting each sound just right; from the straight-outta-1970 vocal treatment to the vintage guitar and bass tones, everything on Give Me Pink serves to perfect a mood and attitude that the band are able to build on with each of these 12 songs. From the New York Dolls-esque bluesy rock of "Red Hand Station" to the Tarantino soundtrack standout in waiting, "The Ballad of Robert McNamara," Teenanger have managed to pull together an exciting, vibrant collection of vintage garage rock that sounds as relevant today as it would have 40 years ago." -Exclaim

HOLY COBRAS (Ottawa) http://www.myspace.com/holycobras

"Psych-punks from the capital of Canada, which is actually Ottawa, not Toronto or Montreal, you dumb American hillbillies. "He Is Rubber, Not Real" is torn from the Wooden Shjips songbook. "Age of Reptile" and "Mama Jihad" are bubbling with weird synth oscialltions and gurgles and outsounds and make me think of outre Detroit skronk, like Human Eye or something, but not as punk. Or rock. Or good. Not bad though. Three more cuts on Side 2, recorded by Choyce in Montreal. Spaceship-synth overload with tribal beatings, singer sounds a bit like Hot Rod Todd. "Drugstore" is The Distraction reading a PK Dick novel. These guys have a bunch of tapes out and a single upcoming on Telephone Explosion." - Terminal Boredom

JEFF The Brotherhood - http://www.myspace.com/jakeandjamin

Real life brothers, Jake and Jamin, also known as JEFF The Brotherhood will finally be in the national capital. Their 2009 album Heavy Days hit high on the campus charts and with good reason. Their pop garage grunge sound is infectious. Just try to get Bone Jamm outta of yer head after one listen.

Mannequin - http://www.myspace.com/mannequintown

Psychotropic Garage Goth Burnouts bring the analogue drum machine and sweet sweet harmonies. Altered state of mind a plus.

Mouth - http://www.myspace.com/aquapork

If you havent caught on to what these boys & girl are doing you probably dont know anything about the Ottawa music scene anymore. All the right kinds of trash and treble.

The Dagger Eyes

I haven't posted anything new on this in a long time. To anyone who actually checks this. I'm sorry. But to make it up to you, I present you with this.
A month ago I posted about the SUPPOSITORIES last show that was happening at Bored To Death.

THE DAGGER EYES are the new band forming out of 1/2 of SUPPOSITORIES. That half being comprised of Ian (bass/vocals) and Ilona (guitar). I clicked on a link to their myspace page and clicked on the first song not really knowing what to expect. Holy shit! I was immediately pummeled by a blast of punk fury. Somewhat similar to the approach that SUPPOSITORIES were going for but THE DAGGER EYES turn it up a few notches till the knob broke off or exploded. Straight-forward and simple but way faster, more exciting and more intense.

RAYGUN starts with 4 drum hits then the guitars come running out of the gate playing one chord. That's all that was needed. Ian's vocals kick in delivered in his high pitched voice that sounds like he's being chocked by some invisible hand. They throw in some electronic sounds and manipulations on the vocals that are a nice touch. A minute and twenty-two seconds of punk perfection.

With the second song, VAMPIRE, I am getting a very late 70's/early 80's Orange County vibe from it. Totally dark and vicious like getting chased into a dark alley by a razor-wielding psycho. Another really straight-forward and simple song with a spoken verse then the chorus blasts in "I SANK MY TEETH INTO YOUR FLESH!"

I'm really liking these songs a lot. These two songs pressed onto vinyl would make a killer debut single. I am VERY curious to see what else they have up their sleeves but for now these two songs will do. Definitely looking forward to seeing them live.

Peach Kelli Pop LP out now!!!

You may know Allie as the drummer of the White Wires...now you will know her as PEACH KELLI POP!

Ottawa strikes again!!!!!!!!!!!

Going Gaga Records is humbled and honoured to present to you

limited to 500 copies in full colour jackets

"Some people call her Peach, some people call her Kelli, her real name is Allie, and she’s obviously on top of the pops!  Peach Kelli Pop is the name of Allie’s solo project…100% written and recorded by this young phenom!  and by 100% I mean it!  Allie plays every single track on these recordings!  Pop to the max, short catchy songs, mid-tempo, just the right amount of reverb, and unforgettable hooks!  A feel good sound throughout…no downers, just happy rollers start to finish, you’ll be singing these songs in your head after one listen.  A totally fresh take on recording here…you gotta hear it.  Allie just records it and mixes it to the way she likes.  No parameters, no guidelines, no standard operating procedures, just straight up intuition of a punk kid.  The result is a fantastically real sound!  You need to have this record…you all know the significance of the “first”.  Watchout!"

Capital Distraction presents...

BAD VIBRATIONS are a band who I have trouble describing. I know exactly what signifiers I'd like to use but it's just that "indie rock" and "grunge" have terrible connotations these days. This trio plays upbeat driving music in the vein of SEBADOH, ERIC'S TRIP and even some Sub Pop-era NIRVANA. They absolutely killed it when they played here in ...May and I know many people are looking forward to seeing them again.

MANNEQUIN are a new duo featuring Mat Oxley of TOTAL CRUSH, CRAZY OCEAN, WAX ATTIC & NERVOUS SYSTEM as well as Jesse from NERVOUS SYSTEM, SAVAGE CRIMES & SWEET JANES. They are playing drum machine accompanied space pop.

Suppositories (R.I.P.)

SUPPOSITORIES are unfortunately calling it quits. There is already a new project in the works featuring Ian and Ilona which I'm sure we'll be hearing more about in the near future. I'm just happy that I'll be able to see the SUPPOSITORIES play one last time. They absolutely killed it at GAGA WEEKEND III and haven't played since then.

They are playing at BORED TO DEATH with a new Montreal band called GENITAL HOSPITAL.
THE SUPPOSITORIES are one of the truest forms of punk to have ever graced Ottawa. There is no doubt their sludgy, hard-hitting minimalism would have been on all the Killed By Death, Smash The State and Bloodstains comps, if they existed 30 years ago. And now, unfortunately, they've hit the red button and this is their LAST SHOW!

GENITAL HOSPITAL are a new, soon to be huge, buncha punks from Montreal that share members of DEMON'S CLAWS and CONFUSERS. Their songs are grimey as fuck and loaded with hooks that dig deep. When they release their record, they will be your new favorite band!

As always, beers are cheap as fuck for a Friday night.. if you hate good music, come drink $4 Labbatt 50 & Black Label.

Needles drop at 10pm.

$4 for 2 bands and 3 DJs! "They even do punk pricing, oh geez I love these guys!"

Failures' Union & The Mnemonics.

Capital Distraction presents...

In early 2004 FAILURES' UNION came together in Buffalo, NY. Their sound is reminiscent of much of the great indie and alt-rock of the 1990's, with hints of The Lemonheads, Dinosaur Jr, Guided by Voices and Superchunk layering their simple catchy songs. They are a band that are doing things for all the right reasons and steering clear of t...rends. They are playing a style of music they grew up on and that they never stopped loving. Features members of LEMURIA, THE EXIT STRATEGY & THE GRAIL.

THE MNEMONICS - Ottawa. First show.

This will serve as THE MNEMONICS first "real" show after having played in a garage in the middle in the day. These are some familiar faces trying on a new hat. This time playing some insanely catchy power pop. Members of CENTRETOWN CRIPPLERS, GARAGA & THE ALLRIGHTS.

METZ - Negative Space/Automat 7"

Toronto's METZ are an unstoppable force. They are an absolutely incredible live band have been killing it consistently on the 7 inches they've been releasing on the WE ARE BUSY BODIES label. They just released the third and last record of a three 7 inch set. The songs absolutely rip and continue the progression this band has been on since they released the first record a long time ago. Insanity!

Do yourself a favor and download this for free from WE ARE BUSY BODIES and then buy yourself a copy of the 7". You won't regret it.

Rumor has it that they will be playing here on November 26th.

CRUSADES is a new band in Ottawa. They played their first show at the GAGA WEEKEND 3 and are going to be playing their second show this Friday opening for RED DONS. This show will also serve as a release party for their 7" on SCARED TO DEATH Records.

Here's a little description of the band that appeared in the program for GGW3.

CRUSADES is based on a primary concern: creating a new vehicle for old ideas - most importantly a vehicle decidedly more accessible than those typically employed for these ideas. Drawing from philosophies espoused by such visionaries as Integrity, Gorgoroth, LaVey, Pale Creation, Ulver, DeGrimston, Emperor, etc., Crusades is something of an aural wolf in sheep's clothing, if you will.
You can hear the song "Dreamers" on the SCARED TO DEATH page.

Germ Attak - "Siege" Music Video.

Here's a video for the song "Siege" from GERM ATTAK's DEATH TO COPS 7".

Video shot by Paul Galipeau.

The DEATH TO COPS 7" is a real rager and it comes free with issue #1 of WE ARE PRETENTIOUS ASSHOLES zine. The zine is done by Spencer from YOUNG STALIN and is about record collecting. Here's a little note from Spencer regarding the 7".
Let's discuss the Zine a bit more with a not so shameless plug. It comes with the latest Germ Attak 7", Death To Cops. Four tracks of that great Germ Attak sound, but all revolving around anti-cop themes. This was a split label effort. I did 100 copies with the zine, and then 3 other labels did 300. Jo's Capitalicide handled Canada, Loud Punk from the US, and Yellow Dog in Europe. A global effort for the group that recently toured Indonesia, Malaysia and Japn after several North American ventures and one in Europe. Each label had the same crazy cover art, done by Scott Benz, but all had their own variations.
It also features a few interesting first-hand accounts of record shopping and other record collecting stories and an interview with Pink Eyes of Fucked Up. Pick it up!

The Creeps - Follow You Home 7"

THE CREEPS have just released their new 7" called FOLLOW  YOU HOME. It came out on IT'S ALIVE! records. Here's what IT'S ALIVE! had to say about the record:
The Creeps have been doing their thing for the better part of a decade now. They get better and better with each release. They've been ruling these past couple of years. Follow You Home is The Creeps' sound perfected! Incredible lead and backing vocals, bright and shiny guitar leads over driving rhythms, thick clean bass lines over precision drum beats... it's all there. It's hard to imagine them getting any better than this, but then again it has been and upward trend ever since their beginning. We're super excited to finally have a record out with these creeps!

These four songs rip really hard. 3 new songs plus a re-recorded version of their song from the OTTAWA GAGA compilation that came out last summer.  This band is unstoppable and keep getting better and better and people are really starting to take notice. They've recently opened up for THE RIVERDALES played INSUBORDINATION FEST last month. Pick it up from the label or from the band at their next show which is on Saturday August 7th with MARK SULTAN & BIG DICK at Babylon.

Red Dons - Fake Meets Failure!

Here's a free download of the new RED DONS lp "Fake Meets Failure" that is out on DERANGED and TAKEN BY SURPRISE records.

The '00s or whatever you wanna call the last decade are over, the results are in. Honorable independent publications and the ever growing "blogosphere" outdid themselves with Top 5, Top 10, and Top 100 lists of records that were issued in the last ten years. A common find among these lists was the seminal SO WHAT'S LEFT NOW? LP by Portland, Oregon's THE OBSERVERS released on VINYL WARNING in 2004. The dawn of a new decade is upon us and Doug Burns (Lead singer/songwriter/artist of THE OBSERVERS) has a new band, the RED DONS, featuring Daniel Hajji Husayn, Richard Joachim Preinesberger, and a rotating cast of characters including Justin Maurer (Clorox Girls), Will Kinser (Born/Dead), Zack Brooks (Soda Pop Kids), and Andy Foote (The Physical Challenge). Named after a group of Cambridge professors that operated as spies for the Soviet Union in WW2, the RED DONS continue where the OBSERVERS left off with added elements of Arabic themes in both the artwork and sound. After the much lauded release of their debut album and successfully touring the US, Canada, Europe, and Brazil, the RED DONS entered a Portland studio to record ten new tracks. On this new album FAKE MEETS FAILURE (DERANGED RECORDS / TAKEN BY SURPRISE RECORDS) due to be released in July 2010, the band successfully develops their unique style even further. Coded lyrics about vagabond characters moving back and forth between the lines of the current climate of fear and suspicion that has been brought upon the USA by the war on terror. Again, consistent songwriting and a great production make this record stand out among the current competition. Combining TSOL-like vocals, SoCal punk rage, and the defiant melancholy of Pacific Northwesterners like the WIPERS this powerful release rises above the stack of contemporaries that take on the early 80s punk sound. No retro fashion hype, no flavor of the month. When this year turns, be sure to find this LP in the leading spots of Top 5, Top 10 and Top 100 lists of 2010. This allbum will prove to be unsurpassed in the underground realm of indie, punk, hardcore, and the DIY Rock'N'Roll of today. Though members are now scattered across the globe, the RED DONS will tour the USA in July 2010 and set sail for Europe in the spring of 2010. So What's Left Now? A hell of an aftermath to follow...one hell of a followup record, and one great, fierce force of a touring machine known as RED DONS.

RED DONS (Portland/Chicago) http://www.myspace.com/reddons

RED DONS features Douglas Burns who was the front man of the incredible Portland punk band THE OBSERVERS. After their demise he teamed up with members of CLOROX GIRLS and others to form RED DONS who continued the trajectory of The Observers. Dark and mysterious with catchy hooks and captivating vocals. They have released a 7" and lp and their new 7" and lp just came out on DERANGED & TAKEN BY SURPRISE records. They are constantly touring and their live show is definitely one the best I've ever seen. Exciting and inspiring. Current line up features members of THE OBSERVERS, CLOROX GIRLS, BORN/DEAD, etc.

CRUSADES (Ottawa) http://www.myspace.com/scareddeath

This is the 7" release show for CRUSADES. This is their second show. "CRUSADES is based on a primary concern: creating a new vehicle for old ideas - most importantly a vehicle decidedly more accessible than those typically employed for these ideas. Drawing from philosophies espoused by such visionaries as Integrity, Gorgoroth, LaVey, Pale Creation, Ulver, DeGrimston, Emperor, etc., Crusades is something of an aural wolf in sheep's clothing, if you will." Features members of THE CREEPS, THE VISITORS, SEDATIVES, STEVE ADAMYK BAND, PREGNANCY SCARES, YEAR ZERO, etc.

URANIUM COMEBACK (Ottawa) http://www.myspace.com/uraniumcomeback

URANIUM COMEBACK play less than a handful of shows a year. It's been 2 years since they've formed and I can count the shows they've played on my hands. Perfectly-crafted intense power punk from a group of guys who have been doing it for years. Expect a record on GOING GAGA in the future which will make flip out and wish that this band played more than 3 times a year. Features members of MILLION DOLLAR MARXISTS, BIG DICK, SEDATIVES, BEACH BLANKETS, HOLY COBRAS, STEVE ADAMYK BAND, YEAR ZERO, etc.

TILTWHEEL (Escondido, California)

Tiltwheel are a punk rock institution. They've been at it for years and are still going strong since it's a love for music, friends and fun that motivates them and not the quest for popularity and fame. Catchy punk rock that comes straight from the heart.

YEAR ZERO (Ottawa)

Year Zero are one of the greatest Ottawa bands going right now. Powerful punk with great hooks, great riffs and great vocal melodies. A band that is getting people back into punk rock and reminding others why they love it so much. They are on tour with Tiltwheel and will definitely put on a great show for the hometown crowd.

BARRIER (Montreal/Ottawa)

Barrier are unfortunately coming to an end. With members spread out among several cities and playing in several bands it looks like they aren't going to be able to pull it off anymore. This will be one of your last chances to see this great band perform. Their current lineup has been their best and is churning out some great punk with a touch of hardcore intensity that will put a smile on your face while you pump your fist in the air.

MOTHER'S CHILDREN have been laying low and working hard for a while now. They took an almost half a year break from playing shows while they worked on writing and recording their first LP. After seeing them live a couple of times recently it is plain to see that they've been working hard. Their first LP is called "That's Who!" and is out now courtesy of punk rock/hardcore powerhouse label DERANGED RECORDS. They may seem out of place on this label but if you consider the fact that they've released records for TRANZMITORS, STATUES & THE BAYONETTES - MOTHER'S CHILDREN fit right in.

The record is 11 songs that are a great mix of glam, power pop and catchy rock & roll/punk. MOTHER'S CHILDREN watch SLADE & RASPBERRIES lose a razor fight with THE BOYS & EDDIE AND THE HOT RODS in an alley then they all head to the bar for a drink together.

You can pick your very own copy of this future classic at BORED TO DEATH at RITUAL. Half of the members of MOTHER'S CHILDREN are DJ's at this monthly punk rock party. You'll hear some rare punk rock records that you won't hear anyone else spun by some true afficionados.

You can find out what you're in store for by downloading the BORED TO DEATH - SWIPE THIS TAPE! Vol. 1 mixtape they were giving away at GAGA WEEKEND III. You'll also witness a live set by MOTHER'S CHILDREN! The show costs a measly $3 and bring a few more bucks to pick up a copy of the LP.

Check out the music video they filmed for their song "What'll Happen To All The Girls?"

07.12 Hollows, Shakey Aches & Peach Kelli Pop!

Capital Distraction presents...

HOLLOWS (Chicago. Trouble In Mind Records.)

It's not everyday you get to see your new favorite band. That's what happened to me several months ago when I had the pleasure of seeing Hollows in Austin. Their self title debut LP sounds like disc 5 of One Kiss Can Lead to Another played on Barbarella's spaceship stereo. Garage-Girl-Group at it's absolute best. Do yourself a favor and come see your new favorite band.

These guys have only been around a few months and have already planted their roots deep in Ottawa's dirt. Frantic and heartfelt rock and roll. If you haven't seen them yet you've been missing out.

PKP's bubblegum pop will melt your heart into a puddle of goo... and you will beg for more! With a soon to be release album on Going Gaga, Allie and co are sure to be the stars of many a gooey teenage dream.

06.29 Red Mass, Holy Cobras & Siam Cat.

Capital Distraction presents...

RED MASS (Montreal)

The brainchild of Roy Vucino, aka Choyce (CPC Gangbangs, The Daylight Lovers, Les Sexareenos), Red Mass took shape in 2008 following the inevitable implosion of the volatile and legendary CPC Gangbangs.

Using Red Mass as a platform, Choyce and his collaborators are intent to pursue the ideals of free thinking, the use of chaos, sex-magik and liberation through art.

Now, Red Mass has opened itself to all with a sincere belief that it can offer young artists and outsiders alike a new haven. With a slew of singles, 10"s, EPs and experimental releases, Red Mass is ready to hit. Their psychedelic space rock 'n' roll and its elements of noise, folk, punk and electronic music is a culmination of 12 years of hard work. The dark poppy hooks, laced with other worldy sound effects, are at once an ode to the past, the music of today, and the shape of rock 'n' roll to come.

HOLY COBRAS are becoming an unstoppable force. After solidifying their lineup and recording several different times they're nailing their sound perfectly. They've just returned from playing the OBEY CONVENTION in Halifax as well as playing many out of town shows in recent months.

After a couple of cassette only releases in the last couple of years
Holy Cobras are finally releasing their first single. "Feed Yr Head b/w May You Be Free To Roam" is coming out on June 15th on Telephone Explosion records. You can hear the A-side here. http://www.myspace.com/telephoneexplosionrecords

SIAM CAT (Toronto)

New band featuring Matt Cosgrove. Ex-Fucked Corpse, Nervous System, Savage Crimes, etc.

Nobunny Loves You!

This Thursday June 24th NOBUNNY will be invading and destroying ROCK & ROLL PIZZA PARTY! This is NOBUNNY's third visit to Ottawa the first one being a couple years ago at RRPP with THE SMITH WESTERNS & DEMON'S CLAWS and the second being the infamous Polish Party Palace show with THE WHITE WIRES. Insanely catchy punk rock coming from the brain that wrote and performed songs for SNEAKY PINKS, THE OKMONIKS and HUNX & HIS PUNX to name a few. Always a wild live show full of sweat, smell and sex. Prepare Yourself.

THE NYMPHETS will be playing their first Ottawa show in a few years. They have recently relocated to Sweden and have put out a great new 7" on SIGNED BY FORCE records since the last time they've been here. Always a great live band, they've been known to throw in some pretty interesting covers including COCK SPARRER & BAD BRAINS which is an interested contrast/accompaniment to their originals. "These guys sound like BUDDY HOLLY would if he died in a rocket-ship crash instead of a plane crash." - Standard Issue.

THE STEVE ADAMYK BAND has released a 7" on P.TRASH and has another coming very soon from RED LOUNGE records from Germany. Steve is a jack of all punk trades and can write insanely catchy songs culling inspiration from many different facets of punk rock. Not reinventing the wheel but still giving you a smooth ride.

GAGA WEEKEND 3 Wrap Up: Saturday!

Woke up. Grabbed some food and head over to Yogi's Meatlocker. Ben Jensen of STANDARD ISSUE fame was on fire and was cracking me up. Probably because I was still drunk and he was sober cause he's a dad.

THE SECRET LOVES sounded cool from outside. They covered THE SONICS "He's Waiting" but then lost me when they played a song called "Down With Pants." Way too goofy for my tastes. The first band I watched was THE JOLIETTES from Sudbury. They play perfect pop songs and their voices were so beautiful and soothing that it was like sliding into a hot bath. That hot bath quickly turned into a boiling infernal volcano when GERM ATTAK hit the stage. They absolutely slayed to a ridiculous degree. One song after another, no stops, death to cops, anger charged punk rock. So good. One of the highlights of course. Pick up their records. They have a lot including their new 7" which accompanies the WE ARE PRETENTIOUS ASSHOLES zine. THE WHITE WIRES played a typical set. Drunk, fun, funny, sloppy, happy. Everyone loves watching this band because the songs are so great and everyone loves to dance and bop along and have a good time. New songs are poppier than Flanders' fields. Can't wait for the new lp to come out. It's going to be somethin' else. CRUSADES played our first set. That was really fun. YEAR ZERO played next and were as great as usual. Cannot wait for that Year One record to come out. The cd version should be out soon and the lp will follow shortly. The tape was pretty good but the newer stuff on that record are mind blowing. Passionate, powerful, perfect. I was drunk at this point and need to take a serious break. Went back to the hotel and chilled out for a bit then grabbed some food then before I knew it it was time for the night show!!!!!

COLD WARPS opened and were pretty good. I had downloaded their tape several months ago and enjoyed it although to me it sounds like hardcore kids trying to play power pop. It comes out sounding good but not like what they intend it to be. I don't know. Long story short they play catchy punk with some hooks. Some lyrics are a bit cheesy but it's good in the end. Next up was STEVE ADAMYK BAND and playing this set was weird because the monitors were so damn loud. I thought I was going to go deaf. Super treble-y guitars and Davey's insanely high vocals. I didn't fuck up too much so hopefully it was a good set. THE WALNUT KIDS played next. These kids are wild. Two of them walked all the way from Montreal because no one would pick them up while they were hitch hiking. The bass player launched his bass in a bush to pick back up on their way home. They played WAY better than they did at their set at BORED TO DEATH a few months ago. This band is an anomaly. They write such good songs when they actually do write them but it seems like after 2 years of seeing them they barely have any new ones. Pick up the single on GOING GAGA to hear some quality power pop played by truly fucked up rock n' roll kids. SONIC AVENUES were up next and absolutely destroyed as expected. Fresh off a tour of the West Coast, these guys had their shit dialed. So catchy and precise and great. They probably could have played a song or two less since there was so many bands but it wasn't that big of a deal. STATUES were next. Sudbury's finest. These guys are truly the nicest and greatest people I've ever met and their band is great. These guys can party hard yet still hold it down on stage which is a skill. I can't say enough great things about this band. THE VISITORS had the daunting task of closing the entire weekend but if anyone could do it, it's them. It makes a lot of sense that they would end it all since they're so great and fun and everyone loves their band. The reigning kings and queen of ROCK & ROLL PIZZA PARTY! They were still in fine form after all of the practicing they did for their show opening for SCREECHING WEASEL and tore through a great set of songs from all their records. Their newest record was released this weekend so pick it up. It will blow your mind. Amazing artwork and even more amazing songs. By far the best thing they've done. Six instant classics.

I will update this later with pictures and crap and whatnot later. I gotta go.

GAGA WEEKEND 3 Wrap Up: Friday Night!

I unfortunately had to work Friday morning but luckily I only had to work till 12! Went home and napped (kind of laid in a catatonic state for a little bit) then met up with some friends in the park and hung out. I scored a free hotel room for 2 nights at Les Suites which was conveniently located across the street. After a swim and some drinks we were ready to head over.

(A broken man looms above the city. Forcier pic.)

Monthly punk rock snob fest BORED TO DEATH was held upstairs this month for the occasion. It's usually in the basement on the second Friday of every month. Check it out. They were handing out free mixtapes so you can get a feel for where they're coming from if you aren't familiar.

(GF's by Pierre Richardson)

THE GIRLFRIENDS got things started in their particular fashion. They are getting better and better with time but I think they need to drop the songs where the drummer moves up to sing and it's just guitar and drums backing him. Ritually (pun intended?) drinking out of the shoe was pretty funny but I prefer good songs over antics.

(PKP by David Forcier.)

PEACH KELLI POP was up next. It was their first show with Mat Oxley on drums and I think he did a good job. Davey was fresh off the stage at Maverick's where he opened for Joey Cape/Tony Sly. He shredded those bass lines like they were cheese. Good catchy set as usual. Wondering when a record will finally see the light of day.

(FB by Andrew Carver)

FIRST BASE from Toronto were up next and played simple and catchy pop songs. I wasn't really paying attention to them since I was wandering around and hanging out with people but I do remember them playing a cover that I was into but can't remember what it was. No surprise there.

(MC by PR)

MOTHER'S CHILDREN played next and were great. One of the best power pop bands going these days. They have an lp coming out in the next few weeks and have already recorded another batch of songs. They have been working really hard lately and it shows. Can't wait to hear the lp!

(SA by DF)

STRANGE ATTRACTOR is Jeff from STATUES side project where he writes and records everything himself. The live band features the rest of STATUES and Eric from ULTRAVIOLENCE RAY. Great punk rock tunes ranging from catchy garage punk to raging destruction. I definitely was getting way too drunk at this point and was throwing beer bottles on stage and spitting beer on the band. Who the fuck am I, Sid Vicious? Definitely pick up the lp on Red Lounge or the split 10" with Red Mass if you get the chance.

(ZB by DF)

ZEBRASSIERES made their triumphant return to Ottawa with a record in their hands. Last summer this band quickly became one of the best local bands we had and they abruptly ended when Andrew and Sarah moved back to Calgary. They came back to hang out at GAGA WEEKEND and play a few shows in Toronto and Montreal to celebrate the release of their lp on GOING GAGA. Pick it up if you love fun, summer, Devo, partying and friends. If you don't love any or all of these things, you have a problem. Their set was perfect. They were covered in flour that flew everywhere every time they moved. It was great but I'm sad that that may be the last time I will ever see them.

(SA by AC)

Hung out and danced to the tunes being spun by STEVE ADAMYK and pulled some more punx behavior and smashed beer bottles on the dance floor. Outside some douche wanted to fight people and was mouthing off until he found out I was staying at Les Suites which he deemed as being "pretty baller" and was reason enough for him to shut up and walk away. Went back to the hotel with a few people and lit some sparklers, hung out for a bit then was tucked into bed and everyone left. Apologies to those who deserve them.

GAGA WEEKEND 3 Wrap Up: Opening Night!

So the last two weeks have been absolutely insane. MESS FOLK,  THE FAMINES, BRUTAL KNIGHTS, WHITE LUNG, THE BIRTHDAY SUITS & THE BLIND SHAKE all traveled to Ottawa during the first week of June. The most insane of all was of course GAGA WEEKEND 3!

GGW3 was incredible and exceeded my high expectations. The turnouts were incredible and every band played way better than I've ever seen them play.

(Weekend pass bracelets pic by Pierre Richardson)

Thursday night started off with a bang. It was of course held at ROCK & ROLL PIZZA PARTY as usual except the night is now at NINE on Elgin St. I was honored to get to play in the first band of the weekend again this year. PREGNANCY SCARES opened with our version of THE WHITE WIRES' anthem "Girly Girly Girly" and then played as hard as we could for the rest of the set.
(PS video by Andrew Carver. GB pic by Pierre Richardson.)

Up next were GREED BROS who are basically GET A LIFE LOSERS minus the bass player and with a bit of a simpler, catchier and more straightforward sound. They played a quick 10 minutes which ended with a lot of gear getting smashed. Pretty intense ending for only the second band of the entire weekend.

(Creeps pic by Pierre Richardson)

THE CREEPS played an absolutely perfect set.  They played all the songs I wanted to hear one after another and killed it. A couple of new songs from their upcoming record on It's Alive! and a couple from These Walls and Lakeside Cabin and  they even dedicated a song to a couple from Winnipeg who spent their honeymoon at Gaga Weekend because they wanted to see The Creeps! Insane!

(UC pic by Pierre R.)

URANIUM COMEBACK played their fifth or sixth set ever and it was great as usual. I love this band so much it's not even funny. Songs I've only heard once sneak into my subconscious and resurge the next time I see them. So catchy, so perfect. Can't wait to see a record come out.

(HC pic by Cait Powers)

HOLY COBRAS have been playing out a lot recently and it shows. They're really tight and are an unstoppable force that is playing faster and harder than ever before. They played a couple of rippers off of the Make Pyramids tape as well as a bunch of their newer stuff that I'm loving.  They have a 7" coming out incredibly soon on Telephone Explosion. Hopefully it will be ready for their show with RED MASS on the 29th.

(Suppositories pic by Pierre R.)

SUPPOSITORIES closed off the first night. They completely killed it as usual and the crowd seemed really into it. The bar was insanely packed and everyone was drunk and happy and it was a great way to end off the first night of an weekend of insanity.

As you can see in that last picture Luca was filming the entire weekend for an upcoming documentary. The GAGA WEEKEND 2 DVD was released at this show. It is a 2 DVD box set with the first disk being the 45 minute documentary featuring live songs, interviews and shenanigans and the second disk being a full song from each of the bands who played GGW2. Pick one up from GOING GAGA RECORDS for a measly $10!

Show Tonight!

THE BLIND SHAKE (Minneapolis)

They blew away everyone's expectations even though no one knew what to expect when they played here in January. A truly interesting band that you can't peg into a specific genre. A 3 piece with guitar, drums and a baritone guitar which gives them a unique sound that I really can't describe. You know how Blue Cheer cover of Summertime Blues makes the song heavy and psychedelic? The Blind Shake does that but they're covering a weird concoction of Devo, surf and garage and putting on an amazing show while doing it. Definitely not to be missed.

"Everytime Birthday Suits play a show, they effortlessly shred modern 'punk' music into visceral shavings that stick under your fingernails with such a magnetic and irresistable passion in their delivery, and you can bet it's topped with nothing less than 120% aggression and style. Their name doesn't allude that these guys play in the nude, but it wouldn't be a surprise to see some overwhelmed first-timers stripping down in front of the stage, either, so look out for one of the most frenetic performances you're likely to catch all year." - Victim Of Time

WHITE LUNG (Vancouver)

This four piece mixes up catchy late 70's punk rock with the anger and vitriol of the 90's Riot Grrrl/Kill Rock Stars scene think THE AVENGERS meets BIKINI KILL but with a twist of the "weird punk" thing that has been going on in Vancouver for the last couple of years. They've released two solid singles and have an lp on the way on DERANGED.

New local fast hardcore/punk. Short and to the point.
