so i just came back from a little HA-HA-HOLIDAY out to cottage country and had marvelous time. unfortunately i had to miss out on IAN guest dj'ing at RAMPAGE on the 26th but i hope it was amazing.

a lot of people came out and had a great time at the FUCKING MACHINES/CRITICAL CONVICTIONS show except for JO came out and had a great time but then got attacked and had his thumb bitten and is now facing months of medical procedures to make sure he doesn't have rabies! good luck! other than that, the show ruled and the bands killed it. i am powerless against the opening riff to NERVOUS BREAKDOWN. it's a pavlovian thing i think.

i was surfing around and went to check out RAZORCAKE's website and what am i greeted with? an interview with my good pal DAVE WILLIAMS!!!! check it out HERE! CONGRATS!

anyone that still has an gusto left after new year's eve should come down to the basement of james st pub on the 2nd for the first RAMPAGE of 2009.

see you next year.

wake up wakefield!

there's a show on january 3rd that is destined to be legendary. here's the ingredients: THE WHITE WIRES, MOTHER'S CHILDREN, THE SUPPOSITORIES, a bus, 48 punk rockers on said bus and a small bar in wakefield called KAFFE 1870. talk to people in the bands to try to get a hold of a ticket to take the bus there and back. if you can find your own ride up there, the show is free. it's going to be BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE WAKEFIELD.

the weather outside is frightful.

HORSES and WORLD WAR I made it to ottawa despite the terrible weather they encountered on the way. both bands played excellent sets to a small crowd. a big thanks to everyone who came out to the show despite the freezing cold weather. it is greatly appreciated.

THE FUCKING MACHINES & CRITICAL CONVICTIONS are playing this tuesday december 23rd at the BYTOWN. should be quite the spectacle as it usually is. 5 bucks. 10 pm. you really have nothing better to do.

OTTAWA is truly lucky to have such a great scene these days with so many amazing bands. one of the more elusive ones is URANIUM COMEBACK. these guys played their 3rd show ever on friday night and they were incredible. their songs are so catchy they are going to be stuck in my head for weeks. if you still haven't seen these guys do yourself a favor and go see them next them they play. the bad news is that it probably won't be for a while but the good news is that next time they play they'll be playing a bunch of new songs. the only way to hear them right now is to track down their rehearsal videos that are up on a certain video sharing site. do your research.

record news...
SEDATIVES started recording our full-length this weeked. THE VISITORS are putting the finishing touches on their 7" that is going to be out on HOUSE PARTY RECORDS out of halifax. the label is run by GER who is the genius behind the ROCKET TO RUSSIA radio program which rules. THE CREEPS "THESE WALLS" 7" will hopefully be out some time in the early new year. fingers crossed. knock on wood. it's coming out on BLACK PINT RECORDS. speaking of which i don't think i ever mentioned that there was an interview with these guys on the RAZORCAKE website as conducted by DAVE WILLIAMS (SEDATIVES/FUCKING MACHINES). you can read the interview here.

a word to the wise

on another note - THE HAVOCS from SUDBURY are coming back. this band features the HOULE BROTHERS who comprise the rhythm section of a little band called STATUES. you may remember when they played at ROCK N' ROLL PIZZA PARTY in late december and the bytown tavern was packed WAAAAY over capacity and they played a set of great songs interspersed with covers by the likes of BUZZCOCKS, THE JAM, THE CLASH, THE WHO, etc. etc. etc. well, this time around they're coming to BABYLON on DECEMBER 12th. they will be joined by the elusive URANIUM COMEBACK. these gentlemen have played 2 shows so far and are ready for round 3! if you missed their set at RRPP during the GAGA WEEKEND or at PUNK ROCK KARAOKE, they are an amazing band and a force to be reckoned with. great catchy songs with amazing vocal harmonies which is what you'd expect from a line-up comprised of ex-members of MILLION DOLLAR MARXISTS and current members of SEDATIVES & MOTHER'S CHILDREN. they've done covers by POINTED STICKS & THE REPLACEMENTS and their sound lies right around that territory. catchy punk rock with more of a rock twist. there might be another band playing too. there will be dj's. there will be fun.

what am i doing?!?

there's been a lot of exciting things going on in the last couple of weeks that i should recap.

PUNK ROCK KARAOKE II went down and it was pure insanity. a mixed up MOTHER'S CHILDREN line-up played a bunch of u.k. punk songs which was awesome.

unfortunately the original MISFITS band canceled last minute but luckily THE MISCLITS stepped up with an hour's notice and did a handful of songs and allowed all the people who signed up to sign MISFITS songs a chance to show off their stuff.

it all ended with a bunch of the guys from THE FUCKING MACHINES closing the night off with a bunch of 80's american hardcore songs.

it all ended with 4 BLACK FLAG songs and things got a little nutty.

thanks to jessica g. for the videos!!!

the next night was the HOLY COBRAS tape release show at the ROCKER ROOM. THE BEACH BLANKETS opened and they were really great. picture 50's rock played by punk kids with a pinch of the frat boy party atmosphere of early LICENSED TO ILL-era BEASTIE BOYS if that makes any sense. they are definitely a new band to look out for and hopefully they'll be playing more shows in the future. it was my first time really seeing HOLY COBRAS with their new line-up and i thought they sounded really good and i'm interested to see what else these guys come up with as they continue.

this saturday was THE WHITE WIRES lp release and it was an amazing time. unfortunately i missed some of THE VISITORS' set. it's no secret that i love this band and i think they're great every time i see them but they were exceptionally fierce that night. SCHOOL JERKS from toronto played next and i thought they were amazing. they played quality early 80's hardcore influenced songs with barely any time to breathe between songs. THE WHITE WIRES ended it all off with a bang. they hadn't played since july 1st and a lot of people were anticipating this set. they definitely delivered and no one left disappoint as they tore through most of the songs from their lp and one CONNIE FRANCIS cover. the turn out for this show was exceptional and i highly urge everyone to pick up a copy of their record either from the local record stores or from them the next time they play.

LUKE NUCLEAR and I are starting to dj at the ROCKER ROOM every friday night starting this friday. if you want to come hang out and listen to us spin some tunes come on down. some nights we'll have bands too such as the 19th when we'll be hosting HORSES and WORLD WAR I who are both from toronto/halifax. if anyone was at the STATUES/VANCOUGAR show you probably saw HORSES play a few of their songs as well as back up MALCOLM BAULD. they play that kind of upbeat indie meets folk meets country kind of stuff. i don't know how to describe or what genre it is but i like it. WORLD WAR I has members of HORSES but they are doing something more in the WIPERS meets WARSAW vein which i am calling POST POST-PUNK PUNK. there'll be more info on that to come later.

position 1. position 2.

SUPPOSITORIES had their record release show on thursday at ROCK N' ROLL PIZZA PARTY. SAVAGE CRIMES opened up the show. i thought it was the best they've ever played and recording with IAN from SUPPOSITORIES clearly help them up their game. the two new songs they played are definitely my favorites from them and i'm waiting to hear a lot more great songs from these guys. SUPPOSITORIES killed it as well and i highly suggest grabbing a copy of their MOMENTS OF SQUARE VIOLENCE EP. if you still don't have a record player, you better buy one cause a lot of bands are putting out records these days and they're probably all going to be on vinyl so deal with it.

the new issue of STANDARD ISSUE was also released out into the wild that night. i think it's one of the best issues yet. the cover boldly claims that it's the FINAL ISSUE but i'm curious if it's disgusting corpse will rise again!

saturday night THE VISITORS, THE LEFTOVERS, THE PG-13'S & THE ROMAN LINE played at DEKCUF. i missed the first two bands because we were busy listening to new MASSHYSTERI record and listening to the tracks from THE CREEPS new ep twice but THE LEFTOVERS played a great set which opened up with a cover of CHEAP TRICK's "HELLO THERE". i'm not really familiar with that band but it was an entertaining set nonetheless. THE VISITORS were sloppy but great. sloppy in the sense that they had to start almost every song twice due to miscommunication or forgetting what key a song is in or whatever reasons/excuses they have but once the songs kicked in, they were great. a couple of new songs that i hadn't heard yet since i missed their last couple of shows were played, much to my delight. SOUTH FOR THE SUMMER is a hit for sure and i assume it will appear on THE VISITORS 7" that is being put out by the one and only GER HUBLEY of ROCKET TO RUSSIA fame. i can't wait to get my hands on that thing!

holy crap!!!

THE GOODNIGHT LOVING show was absolutely amazing. definitely one of the best bands to grace RRPP and such great guys too! it was great to see a lot of people up front enjoying the band and buying records. they were really happy with the show!

this weekend SEDATIVES went on our first wild weekend trip and it was amazing. hanging out with STATUES in SUDBURY on friday was a great time. the TOWNEHOUSE was bumping!
check out the SEDATIVES BRO-DOWN at 1:50. nerds!

the next night was in TORONTO's insane punk rock lair the BAD CAVE where we played with SCHOOL JERKS, BAD SKIN & HATED. kids were flipping out and destroying the ceilings and each other. it was wild! SUNDAY ended in MONTREAL with an amazing lineup of CASTAVETS, CRITICAL CONVICTIONS, ULTRAVIOLENCE RAY, THE OMEGAS & STATUES. it was a really great show although sparsely attended.

a lot of cool stuff is coming up that should get you excited like the HOLY COBRAS cassette release party and THE WHITE WIRES lp release!!!!!!! holy shit! it's finally coming out.

the goodnight loving

we have a last minute show coming up at ROCK N' ROLL PIZZA PARTY on november 6th. we're going to be hosting a great band from milwaukee called THE GOODNIGHT LOVING. they're playing a few more north american shows before they're heading out to europe. we were lucky enough to have them come out and play here. they play music influenced by punk and garage rock with a hint of pop and blues played with passion and excitement. they remind me of REIGNING SOUND which is a good thing because that band is absolutely amazing.

no time no time no time for links...

the VANCOUGAR/STATUES show turned out to be a great night with a really great turn out for a tuesday night! all the bands were great and despite a few technical difficulties it was a great night!

there's some cool stuff coming up with HALLOWEEN right around the corner.

on thursday night THE KIDS are flying over from belgium to blow some minds and if that wasn't enough BRUTAL KNIGHTS are playing with them. throw a couple of great locals GERM ATTAK and CRITICAL CONVICTIONS and you've got a recipe for an amazing show.

if you still feel like partying afterwards head on down to the bytown for ROCK N' ROLL PIZZA PARTY!

the next night is HALLOWEEN so there's a lot of stuff going on. the long running HALLOWEEN HARDCORE will be a great time with BURIED INSIDE, THE CREEPS, FUCK THE FACTS, BRIGHTS, TODAY I CAUGHT THE PLAGUE & ALASKAN destroying babylon. it's an early show with doors opening at 5 pm. you'll probably want to buy tickets or get there early because it'll will possibly sell out.

that shit will be done EARLY. so you can head on down to BRIXTON'S for a special halloween edition of SKA, SOUL, ROCK N' ROLL. as long as they play the MONSTER MASH, i'm down. this shit is free!

speaking of which there's also a party in centretown at MONTGOMERY LEGION HALL. THE FLAPS are playing and there's a bunch of dj's dj'ing such as LUKE NUCLEAR, dj NATHANIEL, dj C.VIRILITY and a bunch more. like i said, as long as they play the MONSTER MASH, i'm down. shit costs 5 bucks.

on saturday the 1st, THE NYMPHETS return to ottawa to play the BYTOWN BLACKHEARTS fundraiser with THE SUPPOSITORIES, THE MISCLITS & FOOLS LIKE YOU. it's at the BYTOWN. 8 pm $5.

sitting here waiting for something to happen

back in august THE CHARLATAN ran a little piece about things to do in the city which included a bit about ROCK N' ROLL PIZZA PARTY. i was interviewed about it in the summer but didn't bother to find out if it ran or not recently.

here's the portion about RRPP...

"Who doesn't like partying with their friends, listening to music and eating pizza?" said 'Skid Vicious," an Ottawa-area DJ.

According to Vicious, this is the idea behind the Rock 'N Roll Pizza Party, thrown every Thursday night at 10 p.m. at the Bytown Tavern at 292 Elgin Street. The main event takes place in the basement of the Bytown and features live DJs and local bands, cheap drinks and, of course, free pizza.

The weekly party has proven to be very successful since its birth in the winter of 2007.

"It's gotten a really great reaction," said Vicious, who often spins at the party. "There are consistent, big crowds of people coming out."

The party is the brainchild of local DJs Luke Nuclear and B-Rad who felt that there were a lack of local venues playing punk rock, garage and pure rock and roll music.

"It's great for people who are into something different from the Top 40 drivel being blasted out of the speakers at most bars in the city," explained Vicious.

The event was originally held at Babylon, a club on Bank Street, but event co-ordinators felt that the atmosphere of the Byward's basement location was more of the personal, low-key environment that they hoped to create. Vicious said that since the move the party has only grown in popularity and warned that party-goers hoping to grab a slice of free pizza should arrive early.

"You've got to be quick," he said, "because once it shows up people turn into pizza piranhas and will decimate seven pizzas in about two minutes."

friday night was a good time with JAY REATARD coming back to our city again for the second time this year. the set this time wasn't marred by technical difficulties and they just blasted through a bunch of songs for 25 minutes straight. there was more of an emphasis on the tracks from the matador singles but there was still a lot of older songs in there to keep the people who haven't got a hold of the new tracks yet happy.

here's a video of MY SHADOW taken by my brother...

and a couple pictures taken by a wonderful fellow by the name of PIERRE.

you can check out the rest of his pictures here. he doesn't only take pictures. he's also into midnight basement shredding!

they're coming back!!!

THE NYMPHETS are coming back!!!! you may remember back in may the played a free show at THE MANX with THE WHITE WIRES. the place was packed and it was a great time. they're going to be playing at the BYTOWN TAVERN on november 1st with ottawa's only all-female MISFITS cover band, logically called the MISCLITS! THE SUPPOSITORIES will also be playing along with FOOLS LIKE YOU. GEMINI SIDESHOW will be dj'ing and TIPSY MCSWAGGER will be hosting.

the show is a benefit for the BYTOWN BLACKHEARTS, ottawa's first roller derby team. so come out and support by spending the measly 5 dollars!

it feels like summer in october...

so this weekend ruled really hard! seeing DILLINGER FOUR two nights in a row was great. once to a mostly unresponsive crowd (they were opening for NOFX) and once to people who actually cared. both sets were fun but the second one was much more enjoyable. NOFX was pretty good especially since they dropped THE QUASS/DYING DEGREE, GREEN CORN & PERFECT GOVERNMENT among others. wow. STATUES played the saturday night show and were as great as usual. they even covered LIPSTICK by BUZZCOCKS which is one of my favorites.

STATUES were interviewed by HARDTIMES.CA while they were in montreal.

check out the interview!

don't forget they're playing here on the 21st!!!

100th post!

so it's my 100th post. how exciting.

last night, luke and i made these shirts for KEMPTVILLE/OTTAWA hardcore band SMARTMOUTH.

the design is HAND-DRAWN by PASCALE which is awesome. it looks amazing. they're playing a show in KEMPTVILLE on saturday with TRAP THEM and FURNACE and you can pick one of them up there.

i'm pretty happy with how they turned out. if you want some shirts or pins or posters or spiritual guidance, check out FIVE AND DIME and we can help you out.

i'm looking forward to NOFX/DILLINGER FOUR on friday and DILLINGER FOUR/STATUES on saturday in montreal. it's going to rule!!!

back porch video

"Back Porch Video was one of the first cable television-based music video programs. It premiered on January 28th, 1984 as the brainchild of Russ Gibb, former owner of the Grande Ballroom in Detroit, Michigan. Gibb is best known as the radio DJ who suggested the Paul is Dead rumor, suggesting that Paul McCartney of the Beatles was actually dead.

Shown out of Westinghouse's Group W Cable studios in Dearborn, Michigan, Back Porch Video stayed on the air for the better part of 16 years.

What made Back Porch Video unique was that it was crewed and hosted primarily by area high-school aged students. The program aired live in Dearborn from 10pm - 1am on Saturday nights, although that was later expanded to 9pm - 1am after about one year of cablecasting. The show was broken up into hour-long segments, each of which was hosted by a different personality (or personality team.) This allowed for the programs to be distributed in hour-long segments to a myriad of other cable systems in the Southeast Michigan area. The program also saw a short run of three programs on Detroit's PBS station, WTVS-TV Channel 56, and won a CableACE award for excellence in 1985.

The musical style favored by most of the hosts was alternative rock, although plenty of pop music, heavy metal, rap and hardcore punk was also shown. Within the first few years of being on the air, Back Porch Video was serviced by most every major record label, as well as dozens of smaller labels and independent video promoters.

Some of the VJ’s from 1989 thru 1992 were, Nicholas “Big Nick” Sawabini, Peter Sawabini, Scott “Mad Dog” Cook, Eric “Gangster o' Love” Gupka, Stacey Corbet, Rebecca Ramirez, Damian Dobez, Bill Russell, Kevin Esser, Alex Garcia, Bryce Miller, Darryl Miller, and David Schroeder."
-taken from wikipedia

if you're bored you should definitely browse through their youtube videos. there's a lot of cool live footage of bands and some music videos you've probably never seen. you have to wade through some crap but there's a lot of cool things in there.

tomorrow night THOMAS FUNCTION is playing with WEAPONS OF MASS SEDUCTION at the dominion. doors are at 9 and i'm not sure how much it is to get in.

THOMAS FUNCTION "filthy flowers"

kids on coffee

sudbury's ULTRA VIOLENCE RAY will be hitting up ottawa on wednesday september 3rd. they must be big BILL STEVENSON fans because they take the hardcore attack of BLACK FLAG and the good clean fun of DESCENDENTS and link them together. also, both of those bands have songs about coffee and so does UV RAY.

here's a video of them covering CALIFORNIA SUN by THE RAMONES.

they're going to be playing with toronto's BAD SKIN who have more of an early 80's hardcore sound to them and two local bands KNIVES AND FORKS FOR FREEDOM and H.O.P.E.
the show is at THE BAYOU. doors at 7:30/$8/AA.

that show and many others are being put on at THE BAYOU by KAVRAN PRODUCTIONS. they've got tons of shows coming up so keep an eye on these guys.

check that shit out.

i'm gonna quit this town.

THE WALNUT KIDS were great on thursday. i unfortunately had to leave shortly after their set due to a throat infection. i heard GUNSMOKE were great as usually and it's great those guys are back. you can check out some videos from their touring my checking out their blog.

i was completely out of commission for most of the weekend but was able to drag myself out to catch THE WALNUT KIDS & MOTHER'S CHILDREN play a house party. THE WALNUT KIDS played a great set with a lot of covers thrown in. they covered THE BIG BOPPER, STIFF LITTLE FINGERS, EDDIE & THE HOT RODS and even THE BLACK LIPS. TEENANGER also played but i missed their set. MOTHER'S CHILDREN were great as usual. they're getting tighter and tighter every show. someone really has to release those singles for them.

it was a good time although it was insanely hot in that living room. you haven't partied until you've partied on penicillin, man.

radio's in motion

i've been doing a radio show at CHUO for a month and a half. it's called WAITING TO BE FORGOTTEN and it airs at every tuesday at 12 pm. the reality being that most people can't listen to the radio at noon on a tuesday i've started to make mp3 files of all my shows. you can download them and listen to them at your convenience. i've already posted episodes 1 through 5 and you can check them out here.

dance to the rock n' roll band

last thursday MOTHER'S CHILDREN absolutely destroyed the bytown tavern at ROCK N' ROLL PIZZA PARTY. they've only played a few shows and they keep getting better and better every time they play.

here's a video of them playing "dance to the rock n' roll band.

LET'S DANCE are clearly in a point of transition between more of a fast punk rock sound and the power pop thing that is really big right now. they have their eyes set on big things but left me indifferent.

two days from now THE WALNUT KIDS from montreal will be playing RRPP along with GUNSMOKE who are back from a month long tour. it'll be a blast.

Thursday, August 14, 2008

let the mother's children dance!

just a reminder that edmonton's LET'S DANCE! and ottawa's own MOTHER'S CHILDREN are playing tonight at ROCK N' ROLL PIZZA PARTY. come early to check out a dj set by mike of MOTHER'S CHILDREN. 9 pm/free/19+

saturday night, TEENAGE BOTTLEROCKET are playing at MAVERICK'S with THE RIPTIDES, THE SIDEKICKS & CLOCK STRIKES MUSIC. if you're into the world of bands who grew idolizing the RAMONES and SCREECHING WEASEL this is the show for you. 9 pm/$10 advance/$12 door/AA.

counting change in the checkout lanes

the show last night was a lot of fun. it was a great turn out and a great show. BRIGHTS started their set off with a JAWBREAKER cover which definitely made me very very happy. i hadn't seen them since november and they have chris on drums now which was definitely a good idea. STATUES played next and it was as great as expected. they played a few songs from NEW PEOPLE MAKE US NERVOUS which i think is the record most people are familiar with. if you don't own this record, definitely look into it. they also did a WIPERS cover which is always a good thing. SEDATIVES played next and were pleased with the outcome. we finally got to play a bunch of new songs which felt good. LUKE NUCLEAR spun some records at the end of the night that got some people dancing then it was down the street to party till morning. such a great night.

thanks to everyone who came out. you can see a lot more pictures by PIERRE and a lot more pictures by CAIT. if you missed out or you want to do it all over and don't mind driving a couple of hours, SEDATIVES & STATUES are playing in montreal tonight with THE CONFUSERS. it's going to be a blast, that's for sure.

i can't stand people

GUNSMOKE has been on tour for a couple of weeks. they've been putting up videos of them out and about all over in canada. you can check them out here. their tour ends in exactly 2 weeks when they play at ROCK N' ROLL PIZZA PARTY. they've played RRPP many times and it's always a great time.

opening that night will be THE WALNUT KIDS. i hope you're ready to have a new favorite band because these kids know how to write a catchy tune. they play infectious punk rock that will keep you coming back for more. great riffs and great vocal patterns that are undeniably great. they play sloppily but with passion and that's all that matters. i've been listening to the 3 songs they have up on repeat for a while now.

yohawks & squirrels

SCOTT of SKA, SOUL ROCK N' ROLL tipped me off to a cool article he compiled regarding OTTAWA GANGS & GARAGE BANDS from the 60's. it's a cool little piece of Ottawa history that you won't be really hearing about when you're taking your bus tour of the city.

Yohawks & Squirrels & Ottawa 60s bands

This garage punker popped up on a youtube feed I have.

Seeing the Sir John A. record label has reminded me that I want to post some info on the 'Yohawks & Squirrels' of Ottawa I'm trying to investigate for kicks along with other Ottawa 60s scene stuff I come across.

A member of my scooter club who'd grown up in the 60s in Ottawa posted a link on Canada Day to this info regarding a band made up of older gentlemen called the Yohawks in Ottawa:

"Before most of you were born there were Yohawks and Squirrels. mmmmm, I still remember my suede desert boots." - Lorne B.
The History of the Yohawks

The story of The Yohawks dates back to the days of the "British Invasion", just before the Summer of Love, and long before commercial radio became formatted for specific music genres and listener demographics. "Back in the day" bands would book four hours of studio time in Montreal (Ottawa didn't have a professional studio then) and record an A side and a couple of B sides, send the master off to the Smiths Falls RCA pressing plant, and hear themselves on CFRA, CKOY, or CJET two weeks later.

In the late sixties, as part of the Five D, an Ottawa band which enjoyed success throughout eastern Ontario, Dave Poulin, Brian Bradfield, Brad Campbell and Keith Richardson formed a lasting friendship that, forty-two years later, has resulted in their first album of fresh, original songs. While each member went on to other musical endeavors after the Five D, it's only now that time and technology has allowed the group to explore their collective creativity without any constraints.

It was appropriate to find a new identity for this project, as the material in no way resembles the "bubble gum" sound of Ottawa's first "boy band". After several attempts at finding a name (some funny, some rude) the band settled on The Yohawks. The name has a special meaning and a history in Ottawa. In the late sixties, a Yohawk was a person who dressed with a certain style; sneakers, desert boots or penny loafers, with a plaid, madras or paisley shirt and tight fitting chinos. On the other side were The Squirrels. With their jet boots, greasy hair and jean jackets they presented a tough fa├žade. This was Ottawa's version of "Mods" and "Rockers", and the first recorded gangs in the city.

Heres a little blurb I came across on google in an Ottawa Police Recommendation:

The phenomenon of street gangs is not new. People who lived in Ottawa in the late sixties and early seventies would be familiar with the Squirrels and the Yohawks, two prominent gangs of that time. From anecdotal accounts, members of these gangs limited their criminal activity to minor property crime and assaults. Members occasionally possessed knives; however, they were seldom if ever used. The rules of engagement for disputes between rival groups were clear; fight involved one on one and when someone was down the fight was over.

I recognized the Yohawk/Squirrel reference because it was mentioned in an article by Ottawa native Jeremy Gluck. Gluck moved to england in the late 70s and was the lead singer in The Barracudas who attained some success with their hit Summer Fun.

Barracudas - Summer Fun:

"Gluck grew up in Ottawa, the capitol city of Canada. But his heart was set on rock an roll, and he knew it wasn’t going to happen in Ontario. He had his teen band phase…the first one was called the New Master Race and the second one was the Yohawks. When asked about these bands, Jeremy recoils as though confronted with a long hidden criminal record.

"Cripes, this really is crass exhumation! What sort of deranged maniac wants to know such things??", he pleads. On my end of the web I give a pitiless shrug. "Look", he says, "Thing is, The Yohawks never existed, well, they did, Ottawa in the late 50s/early 60s there were apparently two gangs, The Squirrels and The Yohawks, that may respectively have been equivalent to Rockers and Mods. When I lived in Toronto my brother and I toyed with forming a band called The Yohawks...we did rehearse "Rumble" a few times. So, anyhow...I liked that name and once submitted a fictional review of a Yohawks album...sadly, it never ran! And I may have credited some obscure 4-track comp contribution to the name."

"The New Master Race thing is from even before that. I recall hitting the high school stage at lunch one day and launching into an impromptu cover of "Dirt" that had the preps and jocks white with being one of the great outcasts of the in-crowd then. So it was pretty much Drop-Out from the beginning...and drop in to REAL ROCK'N'ROLL. We did some great tapes, including one song called "I Got Nothing", that I only found out later, when Kill City was released, that had a doppleganger by the Ig hisself!!

In 1977 Jeremy couldn’t take it any more. He’d wanted to be where the action is for far, far too long. He pulled up stakes in Ottawa and headed to London"

Here is the article:

I mentioned it to a few people after the Canada Day post.

A friend asked her father about the gangs:

"my dad confirmed the existence of the yohawks and the squirrels yesterday. he said they were called the squirrels cause their hair was black and greasy! and the yohawks had long hair and looked like hippies.

there was supposed to be a big rumble at Carlingwood mall, but he doesn't think anything really came of that. neat huh? what would we do without dads to remember all this awesome shit for us?"

Totally, what would we do! My dads unearthed some cool tidbits on the Toronto 60s music scene for me over the past few years.

So far that is the little info I've compiled on the Yohawks & The Squirrels. Judging by the description, the Mods & Rockers comparison seems pretty fitting judging by the uniforms described in the yohawk history article.

Though I can't be sure any of these following groups were theme music for the gangs,
I'll post a few more Ottawa 60s tunes courtesy of tokensurfer, a youtuber who has a great wealth of Canadian garage & pop songs, and contributed many to the Wyld Canada compilation series (comically, according to him that series was created by an native Australian!).

Heres some stuff by the aforementioned Five D - Running Round In Circles

The Esquires - It's A Dirty Shame

The Esquires - Man From Adamo

Staccatos went on to become the Five Man Electrical Band who scored a substantial hit with Signs ( ).

Staccatos - Half Past Midnight

Some surf inspired tunes:
Staccatos - Let's Run Away

I saw this Staccatos LP at a vintage shop and went back to pick it up a few days later but it was gone. If anyone comes across it, let me know, I'd still like a copy.
Staccatos - You Only Die Once

This group, Heart, I'd never heard of until I saw the label browsing Tokensurfers videos:

Heart - Treat Me So Bad

Heart - Help Me Down

Don Norman & The Other Four - Low Man ... super fuzz

Heres a link to more of tokensurfers 60s Ottawa tunes, there are too many to post here:

crooked fingers

BOG LOG III was great on wednesday night. i wasn't too familiar with him going in but was a believer on the way out. he overcomes the trappings of being the typical one-man band that has a guitar, a bass drum and a snare/hi-hat by having drum samples that he turns on and off with foot switches which allows him to play songs with more speed and intensity then you can with just your two feet. his guitar-playing is absolutely insane and he's an entertaining front man. i'd definitely recommend going to see him next time he's in town.

it's a little over a week until STATUES hits OTTAWA again. i'm really excited. if you're not familiar with the band i'd recommend tracking down the NEW PEOPLE MAKES US NERVOUS record. it is phenomenal.

here's a video of them playing one of the songs off their new CROOKED FINGERS 7".

i wanna be your friend

MOTHER'S CHILDREN posted this on their blog a couple of days ago...

Mother's children have just completed our first studio demo and are pleased with the product. We recorded with Yogi (Double Pumpers, Ukrainia, Jake Lovetart....etc.) and can happily say that the kids are alright with the collaboration. There should be some songs on our myspace profile shortly, so come by and see Ottawa 's newest (old) band show and tell their take on love, rock, green house gas emissions, big butts and junior high bell curving. Tell a friend because we encourage playing safe and using the buddy system.
they came through with their promise and put up two songs on their myspace. check out "i wanna be your friend" and "dance to the rock n' roll band". the songs are a cross between 60's pop & rock and 70's glam & power pop.

don't miss their show at ROCK N' ROLL PIZZA PARTY on august 14th!!!

KK wrap-up...

i was out of town this weekend so i had to miss the KING KHAN & THE SHRINES SHOW. here's a run down of what went down on saturday night courtesy of STEPHANE.

king khan was awesome, as expected. the band is super tight and kicks ass. tiny stage though. khan made fun of the zaphods crowd all night. "we got 15 minutes left and then it's DJ smashing pumpkins"
they ripped through a cover of the saints "know your product"; dedicated to resin scraper and something about all the great ottawa punk bands. he kept referring to the post-gig with bloodshot bill at the elmdale tavern as happening at the "emerald tavern".

elmdale house, wellington street, 1 AM?

bloodshot bill was playing when we got there. decent crowd, lotsa dancing, lotsa friends. when khan joined in on guitar, it turned into a garage/punk/oblivians/crypt records style beatdown. sometimes songs would half finish/start again, still, the crowd went nuts. I danced around and i bought them beers. fucking great cover of "papa oom mow mow".

thanks to STEPHANE for the update on the show. he is the host of UP FOR A DOWNSLIDE a great radio show on CHUO. tune in on tuesday nights at 9 pm to hear great garage, punk and glam tunes. i now have a radio show on CHUO as well. WAITING TO BE FORGOTTEN starts at 12 pm and kicks off an entire day of great radio shows on CHUO. check out a listing of punk rock/indie/metal etc. shows.
